Video Streaming Server

Streaming media servers enable web users to almost immediately begin watching a video rather than having to wait for the entire file to download. The WEG uses the Real Helix server which provides the capability to stream all three of the most popular proprietary media formats: Real, Apple Quicktime, and Windows Media. The name of the server is real.ucar.edu.

Content Authoring

Creating streaming videos is an extensive topic. For an introduction, see this Streaming Video Tips article.

Uploading Content

Streaming video files are located in the /web/streaming directory on the server webpub.ucar.edu. To get an account or add a new directory that you have write permission to, submit a work request to the CISL Help Desk.

The /web/streaming directory is the root content directory for the Real Helix server. The server adds a directory called ramgen to the URL. Here's how a file path translates to a URL.

File path: /web/streaming/amovie.rm

URL: http://real.ucar.edu/ramgen/amovie.rm
